With the sun hardly over the horizon, more than 100 Bison employees, family and friends laced up their sneakers and took part in CancerCare Manitoba's 9th annual Challenge for Life last Saturday, "Walking It" and "Working It" en route to our organization's most successful fundraising initiative to date. The "Blazing Bisons," led by Sarah-Jane Perrier, a claims administrator at Bison whose incredible story was featured on our blog earlier this year, combined to raise over $170,000, with donations still rolling in."We pride ourselves on being leaders in our industry and in the community," Perrier said. "As a group, with support from everyone in our company, the Blazing Bison team has brought in an unbelievable $173,578.00 and counting. There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude to those who participated, those who donated and everyone who helped out. We accomplished something amazing!" The "Blazing Bisons" each walked for 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) or took part in a 200-minute workout, while raising a minimum of $500. Several team members went well above and beyond that number, led by Sara Cosentino who raised $35,300 on her own.
Sara's husband, Darren, joined the Bison team in 1996, and his natural sales ability led him to become our Director of Business Development. Unfortunately, after a five-year battle with cancer, Darren passed away on May 31st. Known for his ability to inspire people to tempt their comfort zone and live life to the fullest, Darren's battle, and Sara's incredible commitment to thecause, served as added motivation for the Blazing Bisons this year.
"This has been our very best fundraiser in the history of our support of Cancer Care’s Challenge For Life," said Rob Penner, President and COO of Bison. "A special thanks to Sara Cosentino who is a true inspirational leader. It was a privilege to work alongside her for this important cause."With Spirit and Service as two of our organization’s Core Values, Bison is focused on making a difference in our community and events like the Challenge For Life give us a great opportunity to do just that. In addition to several admirable individual fundraising efforts, our entire organization came together to support the cause at our Challenge for Life Charity Barbecue."Thanks to everyone who has supported this cause and once again showing the community that Bison Cares," Penner said. "I am so proud to be a part of such a great organization!"
