The Trump Effect on Trucking

I was in Boston, MA, during the recent U.S. election. As a Canadian, it was interesting to share such a cultural and political event with locals. On Wednesday morning, just hours after the polls closed, there was a lot of shock and despair but there were also many people who were relieved and excited to have a change in leadership. Regardless of which camp you see yourself in, new leadership in the White House is likely to create change.

There's no ‘I’ in Team, but there is a ‘Me’ in Mentor

I was ready to turn 40, in fact, I was actually looking forward to it. With six months to go, I felt prepared and ready for the next chapter. I had accomplished a lot in the past 40 years and I was excited for what was upcoming.

For those of you over 40, I wonder if you found the same conflicting emotions. On one hand, I still felt like a teenager and I realized that fart jokes would always be funny, but, I also saw that spending my days as a senior were not as distant as they once were. In the same day, I would be bombing through the monkey trails in winter on my mountain bike, but, then also think that I need to put on foot spikes in the parking lot so I don’t slip and get hurt. I was even called an old man at hockey once! I have been called a lot worse, but, being called an old man hurts. That’s cruel.

Both sides of the coin: Denis Wallin's mentorship story

At Bison Transport, we strive to empower our people in many ways. One of these ways is encouraging a culture of mentorship – in both a formal and informal capacity.  You've already read about Dave Fulawka, and how he engages in mentorship in a variety of ways, both at work and in his personal life. In the Bison Transporter's second installment on mentorship, Denis Wallin shares some thoughts about his time in Bison's Driver Finishing Program and how it inspired him to become an In-cab Instructor

How a Folding Bike Changed My Life

Roger takes his DAHON Speed D8 for a spin!

If you’re a regular visitor to The Transporter, you’ve likely already met Roger, a professional company Driver with Bison.

This spring, Roger and Bison Transport approached DAHON folding bikes to test drive some of their bikes to see how they could benefit Driver’s overall fitness. Roger’s been reviewing the bikes and, most recently, reviewed the DAHON Speed Uno. As summer comes to a close, Roger tells us how the DAHON folding bikes have changed his life.

Petra the Peterbilt: A Love Story

You've met Roger, a professional Company Driver with Bison, a few times already. Recently, Roger sent us an email sharing a story about his Peterbilt truck. We found it heartwarming so we thought we'd share it with you, too! Enjoy...

__

“Wow, nice truck! I didn't know Bison had Peterbilts … " I hear this a lot, also .. "Now that is a nice company truck!"

I drive a 2016 Peterbilt 579. I've been driving it for seven months now and I absolutely love it. I'm often asked why, so I decided to write about my love affair with 'Petra'. Yes, I've named my truck, and sometimes I even talk to her.

Petra the Peterbilt

It all started about 30 years ago. As a young boy I got a toy truck for Christmas. "It's a transfer truck”, my mom proclaimed. It was a Peterbilt replica, with the big chrome stacks and Canadian Tire emblems on the box. I would zig-zag it across the floor, and forever dream of someday driving a big Pete of my own.

__

Fast forward to 2008, I've just graduated from a Transport training academy and passed my class one. A small company with about a dozen trucks gives me my first ride. It was a Kenworth W900: a big truck with a Detroit engine and an 18-speed manual transmission. I spent my first two years running the BC Rockies. I was living the dream. But when the company started to have financial trouble during the recession in 2010, I began to look for more stability and better miles.

On The Road With @bluejaysroger: DAHON Speed Uno Review

Bison professional Driver Roger shows off the DAHON Speed Uno.

This summer, Bison has partnered with DAHON folding bikes to road test and conduct reviews of some of their bikes. You met Bison professional Company Driver Roger in our last post about the DAHON bikes.

Roger is focused on cycling off some extra pounds this summer and recently took the DAHON Speed Uno on the road for a few weeks.

Overall, Roger said the Speed Uno is simple to use, with a single-gear, coaster brakes and 20-second set-up, while also fitting easily into the front of his truck.

“Someone with little-to-no cycling experience could easily take the bike out, set it up and drive around the truck stop parking lot or up and down the street,” Roger says.

Not Your Average Bike, Not Your Average Company

Professional Truck Drivers, as many professionals, are required to sit for extended periods. Add to that, long days and limited healthy meal options on the road; can make it difficult to eat well and get exercise on the road. Here are some eye-opening statistics from the Centers of Disease Control about obesity in the trucking industry!

Bison is very focused on promoting health and wellness for our people. We have workout facilities in most terminals, we train new Drivers on healthy eating and we provide consistent promotion to our people about working toward a healthy lifestyle.

Any time that we can make health and wellness easy and accessible, it is a big win for our Drivers.

We are excited to partner with DAHON folding bikes for the summer of 2016. We will be road testing a couple bikes and conducting reviews of them, and we even have a contest to win one!

#TellBisonWhatDrivesYou: What We Learned

In 2013, our Corporate Marketing team launched a driver motivation survey at Bison. But our goal wasn’t to find out whether professional drivers were motivated or not, instead we wanted to find out specifically what motivated them and how they chose a carrier to drive with.

We have now surveyed over 1,000 drivers and learned some interesting things. For one, the majority of drivers chose their career path due to the earning potential. Secondly, we found that our safety programs, policies and reputation were among the top reasons Drivers chose Bison. That made a lot of sense since Bison is North America's Safest Fleet.

In an effort to extend our fact-finding mission beyond Bison, we created the #TellBisonWhatDrivesYou campaign on Facebook. This campaign would give professional Drivers – both with Bison and other fleets – the opportunity to share what drives them day in and day out.
