How a Folding Bike Changed My Life

Roger takes his DAHON Speed D8 for a spin!

If you’re a regular visitor to The Transporter, you’ve likely already met Roger, a professional company Driver with Bison.

This spring, Roger and Bison Transport approached DAHON folding bikes to test drive some of their bikes to see how they could benefit Driver’s overall fitness. Roger’s been reviewing the bikes and, most recently, reviewed the DAHON Speed Uno. As summer comes to a close, Roger tells us how the DAHON folding bikes have changed his life.

Not Your Average Bike, Not Your Average Company

Professional Truck Drivers, as many professionals, are required to sit for extended periods. Add to that, long days and limited healthy meal options on the road; can make it difficult to eat well and get exercise on the road. Here are some eye-opening statistics from the Centers of Disease Control about obesity in the trucking industry!

Bison is very focused on promoting health and wellness for our people. We have workout facilities in most terminals, we train new Drivers on healthy eating and we provide consistent promotion to our people about working toward a healthy lifestyle.

Any time that we can make health and wellness easy and accessible, it is a big win for our Drivers.

We are excited to partner with DAHON folding bikes for the summer of 2016. We will be road testing a couple bikes and conducting reviews of them, and we even have a contest to win one!

Shock And Awe!

I often bump into Drivers I haven’t seen in a while. Once they get over the initial shock of my weight loss they usually follow up with one or all three of these questions:

  • How did you do it?
  • What diet plan are you on?
  • How do you find time to exercise on the road?

First off, I say that first question is a long answer but a person basically needs to eat healthy and exercise. To start, cut down on breads, pop, chips, pastry, any foods with long shelf life. I say “the longer the shelf life, the shorter your life is”.

The Beginning of a New Lifestyle!

In February 2012, my doctor told me that I had to do something about my weight and smoking. He told me to choose one and stay committed. I was pre-diabetic, and my lifestyle had to change.

I didn't know where to start so I picked up some health books and started reading! Everything said to start slowly and make small changes and that would lead to bigger changes and challenges. During the first week I walked twice for 15 minutes. Every week after, I added 5 minutes. I also took away one bad thing in my diet every week and replaced it with one good thing. Every Saturday was my ‘Reward Day’ and I ate anything that I wanted. In my first week I lost 5 pounds. After a month I lost 17 pounds! And after 3 months I had lost 52 pounds!
