Winter has a tendency of being unkind to everyone, and your diesel is no exception. Stay on top of things this winter to prevent any cold-weather mishaps.
Cold Weather Checklist
Fuel Filters: Consider investing in a new one before winter arrives. A contaminated filter will clog and trap fuel.
Water Separators: Check these daily and drain any water.
Fuel Tanks: Be more vigilant about keeping your tank full in the winter. Condensation can form in a partially filled tank that will clog your fuel filter and restrict the flow of fuel.
Fuel Caps: Ensure your fuel cap is secure and that it fits properly.
Vents: Check your vents and ensure that water cannot enter.
Tire Pressure: Cold weather will naturally cause your tire pressure to drop, which will reduce your fuel efficiency. Check your tire pressure before every trip.
Winter Diesel
Diesel sold at major truck stops will be treated for the local weather, but you must be aware of the conditions in the area you’re travelling to. Most major truck stops in cold climates will start treating their diesel when temps drop to around -10c or 15f.
For example, there should be no concerns when travelling South on a tank of fuel purchased in Winnipeg as the fuel will have been treated for harsh Winnipeg temperatures. If you fill up in Texas, you may need to consider using a fuel additive if you’re headed North.
Fuel Additives
Anti-gel diesel additives can be purchased at any truck stop. Use your EFS or Husky fuel card at stations in our network to purchase a bottle. Anti-gel additive will prevent your diesel filters from gelling up and causing engine failure but will not destroy any crystals/gel after they’ve already formed.
Fill your tank with the anti-gel additive before you put in fuel. This allows for the fluid to mix properly and evenly distribute in your tank. Be sure to top up with additives if you fuel down South where it’s warm and have trip that’s headed back up to the chilly North.

Plan ahead and stay safe!
